Jakarta Commits to Strengthen Waste Management Synergy

By developing an integrated waste management system from upstream to downstream, Jakarta Provincial Government confirms its commitment in strengthening the synergy of sustainable waste management.

It was stated by Jakarta Regional Secretary, Joko Agus Setyono, while accompanying Minister of Environment/Environment Handling Board Head, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, to visit Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management, Bekasi, West Java, Sunday (10/27).

Joko said that Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management, that has been operating since 1989, is the only final waste processing facility owned by Jakarta Provincial Government.

"The daily waste volume in 2023 was 7,360 tons with 50 meters of landfill height. It means the facility has almost reached its maximum capacity," he said, as quoted from Jakarta Provincial Government's press release.

Joko added Jakarta Provincial Government has implemented various programs at the upstream level such as RW-based programs, waste bank circular economy, Jakarta Recycle Center, regional and company waste management, and plastic waste control.

Then the scheduled waste collection program, as well as organic waste processing through composting and Black Soldier Fly Maggot (BSF) cultivation.

As in the middle stage step, Jakarta Provincial Government manages TPS and TPS3R, as well as optimizing water bodies and in Seribu Island waste management. Moreover, Jakarta Provincial Government also has built an RDF Plant in the city with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day.

As in the downstream stage, Joko explained, Jakarta Provincial Government also optimizes the Waste Power Plant (PLTSa), RDF Plant facilities at the Bantargebang TPST, and also increasing the landfill mining program. As social support, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is provided for scavengers there.

By 2023, Joko stated, the Merah Putih PLTSa at Bantargebang TPST processed 16,037 tons of waste and produced 1,106 MWh of electrical energy.

In 2024, the RDF Plant Bantargebang successfully processed waste from mining landfills and new waste with a calorific value of 2,800-4,100 kilocalories which was realized through synergy with PT Indocement Tbk and PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk as the main users of RDF.

In order to develop technological innovations, as well as educational programs to increase public awareness of the importance of waste management, Joko assessed, Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to expand cooperation with the private sector, communities, and academics.

"Based on the national targets stated in the National Strategy Policy, we're targeting a 30 percent waste reduction and 70 percent handling in 2025," Joko stated.
